White Wines

2008 Le Délice des Anges Muscat Sec, Vin du Pays d’Oc – from a rarely grown grape this has an aroma of exotic fruits and honey yet tastes dry. It is medium bodied with a long finish. It would be delicious as an aperitif and a great accompaniment to spicy oriental food.
Price £8.40

2009 Cederberg Chenin Blanc - the use of dry ice or carbon dioxide to protect the grape juice from oxygen preserves the freshness of the aromas and flavours of this wine. There's melon on the nose and grapefruit flavours. Perfect as an aperitif.
Price £11.85

2009 Hartenberg Weisser Riesling, Stellenbosch - called "Weisser" to distinguish it from the rather nasty and unrelated Cape Riesling this is an outstanding example of the Riesling grape at its best. Lots of body, lovely appley flavours and absolutely bone dry, it won a gold medal in the Five Nations Challenge for the best wines in the Southern Hemisphere. Drink it with spicy food or leave it to develop for a year or two.
Price £12.50

2010 Domaine de l'Hortus, Bergerie de l'Hortus Blanc - a blend of four different grapes dominated by Roussane, this is a complex wine with citrus and spice on the palate. While it can be drunk as an aperitif, it really excels with food.

2007 Eidosela Seléccion Albariño, Rias Baixas – from the very far north west of Spain this is fresh and minerally with great length. Perfect with seafood or delicate fish like Dover sole.

Red Wines

2007 Domaine de Nizas Le Mas Rouge, Vin du Pays d’Oc – “Elegant, juicy with attractive sweet cassis and spicy notes, firm integrated tannins” (Decanter World Wine Awards 2009). A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petit Verdot it would be lovely with beef.

2009 Château du Cèdre Héritage, AC Cahors - Cahors is the birthplace of Malbec and, until phylloxera all but wiped out the vineyards at the end of the 19th century,  the wines were among the most sought after in Paris. Nowadays the best producers, of whom Cèdre is among the leaders, are moving away from the rustic style of 50 years ago to provide rich, balanced wines which go really well with strongly flavoured red meat dishes.
Decant for a couple of hours before drinking.
Price £12.50

2008 Luigi Bosca Malbec Reserva, Mendoza - the contrast with the Cahors is remarkable. This wine is unmistakably New World. It's rich, ripe and luscious with a touch of oak. It has flavours of red berries, coffee and pepper and will last for many years to come. Although different from the Cahors it is an equally good accompaniment for the same kind of food.
Price £12.85

2008 Domaine de l'Hortus, Bergerie de l'Hortus Rouge - Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre combine to deliver an architypal wine from Pic St Loup. The intensity of the fruit and the long finish make this perfect for barbecues and strongly flavoured red meat.

2004 Buglioni “Il Monello”, Passito Bianco del Veneto IGT – as with many northern Italian dessert wines Passito is made from grapes, in this case Garganega, which have been dried indoors to concentrate flavour rather than left to rot on the vine.
